‘The Frog King with a Golden Crown’
The first vintage of Tsapournakos with the Prince Frog on the label was 2005. This was preceded by small experimental bottlings with a handwritten inscription on the bottle and a small label on the neck.
During the past 20 years, this promising variety has revealed its true identity with roots in France and Cabernet Franc, as well as the close, long-standing ties it has acquired with our land. Indicatively, in a report of the General Directorate of Agriculture and Settlement of Macedonia-Thrace to the ‘National Association of Vine Growers’ in 1932, in Table V, ‘showing the cultivated grape varieties of the Kozani Prefecture’, it mentions the variety Tsapournakia at number 12.
Prince Frog seems to be hiding other secrets as a Tsapournakos, but our place has become his permanent home. He gave us great and unique wines, rich, expressive, delicious, with a distinctive identity and charm, renowned among wine lovers and not only. Velvento is now recorded as a privileged terroir of Cabernet Franc, the ultimate unique Kingdom of Tsapournakos.
From the 2019 vintage, two 225-litre barrels of first-use French oak stood out for the richness and harmony they gave to the wine. They were selected for the anniversary label and bottled unfiltered in 550 numbered 750ml and 100 1.5L magnum bottles.
A few collectible bottles, an expression of love for the land, the vines and the wine, its relationship with man and society.
